What is a whirlpool bath (and why you really need one!)
Once only associated with the rich and famous whirlpool baths are now very much an affordable luxury.
With daily life seemingly becoming evermore stressful what could be better then sliding into your own whirlpool bath at the end of a hard day at the office, your own private sanctuary from just £360 Inc Vat & Free UK delivery.
Upgrading your bath also makes great financial sense if you are thinking of moving home, whirlpool baths can add value and make your property more desirable to potential buyers.
So what exactly is a whirlpool bath? whirlpool baths are generally made from acrylic or steel, often people think of acrylic baths as plastic, this is not the case, generally all acrylic baths are made from a sheet of acrylic then reinforced with fibre glass, typically each bath has a wooden base board for extra rigidity this is often encapsulated for extra strength.
A whirlpool bath is fitted with water jets that circulate water around the bath via a water pump, the number of jets can vary but generally you start at 6 jets and work upwards. The force of the water is controlled by a air control which forces air into the jets via a manifold attached to the underside of the bath, the water pump is normally placed on a pump stand which sits on the floor or it's attached to the frame of the bath within the confines of the bath shell so the bath does not overhang any edge of the bath.
Whirlpool baths can come in many different shapes and sizes, at The Whirlpool Bath Shop we offer a huge range of styles to suit all tastes and budgets, this year has definitely been the year of the L shape shower bath which has proved exceptionally popular, similar in style to the P shape shower bath it's available with a fantastic range of whirlpool systems and underwater lighting options, it's sleek square lines make the perfect centerpiece for up-to-date bathrooms, as well as shower baths we also supply whirlpool baths in various shapes and sizes, always popular corner whirlpool baths can solve many problems when redesigning a small bathroom, double ended whirlpool baths often offer room for two and offer generous bathing areas for a long and relaxing soak.
The biggest problem will be deciding which whirlpool bath to choose!

Spruce up your bathroom on a budget
Fed up with a tatty old bathroom but don't have the budget for a complete refit? Don't worry, there are plenty of ways to make your sanctuary look and feel like new without spending a fortune. Here are ten of our favourites.
1. Firstly, clean up. Replace tatty and tired shower curtains with a shiny new shower screen. Clear glass screens make the room seem lighter and larger.
2. Tidy up the flooring. Because bathrooms have a smaller usable floor area than just about any other room in the house, a little extra luxury on the floor doesn't have to break the bank. Tear up tired carpet or lino and replace with sleek tiling or made-for-bathrooms laminate. Top off with a thick towelling bath mat which combines safety and warmth.
3. Clean up grouting. Remove and regrout any areas which have become discoloured or mildewed; give the rest of your tiling a deep spring clean - it'll feel like new.
4. Re-paint the walls. Choosing a new colour can make your bathroom feel like a whole new room for minimal cost. If you've stuck with a classic white suite, then you have the advantage that you can choose any shade that takes your fancy. Add brightness to a dull room with citrus shades of lemon and lime, or go nautical with blues and turquoise. Or, for a more relaxing feel, choose purples, deep reds and chocolate. Just keep any dark colours away from splash zones if you're in a hard water area - those white patches of limescale don't add to the decor!
5. Replace old radiators with heated towel rails in chrome which go with any decor: they're both practical and beautiful. Add some new towels for an instant hit of colour.
6. Replace the taps. You don't need a whole new suite to add a touch of designer magic to your bathroom: just designer taps! Add a matching shower head and controls for a sleek, coordinated look.
7. Think about lighting. Stark overhead lights can be replaced with softer ambient lighting; place wall lights with daylight bulbs near to mirrors, or use a mirror with a lighted frame.
8. Replace grubby light pulls or tired plastic switches with something more stylish; any good DIY shop will have a huge range of beautiful light controls for you to choose from.
9. Replace a tatty old medicine cabinet with a large framed mirror, which will add light and space to the room. Medicines should, always, be stored in places where small hands can't get to them.
10. Style your room the way the pros do. Think about adding colour to your room with co-ordinating or contrasting accessories. Chuck out the sad old dried flowers and use pretty candles, plants, ceramics or glassware grouped to add interest.
How to choose a corner bath
Corner baths can bring a touch of style and luxury to any bathroom, but choosing the right bath for your room can be tricky. How do you choose a bath that will work for you?
It's often said that corner baths are space-saving; more accurately, they don't require the long wall space that standard baths do, and so can be tucked into corners where baths would traditionally not fit. This can be particularly useful if you're creating a new bathroom from a room that isn't the usual long thin bathroom shape.
But corner baths have their own challenges. The smallest sizes of corner tub might fit into a smaller space than normal, but remember you won't be able to lie down in a 1000mm bath. You might consider this is a price worth paying to have the extra bath, or that the addition of whirlpool jets would make up for it – or you might feel that a luxurious shower would be a better option for your bathroom.
Corner baths typically use more hot water than their straight-sided equivalents, so be sure that your hot-water system can cope.
Baths should have at least 700mm of space around them so that you can get in and out unhindered: remember to plan for this too, there's nothing worse than getting out of the bath and walking straight into a sink! The right corner bath can help to make a small bathroom look much bigger – but one that's crammed in amongst your other fittings will just look, and feel, cramped.
If you want the luxury of a corner bath but don't have the right wall space to fit one, an offset bath could be a good compromise. Offset baths are halfway between a corner and a straight bath, so have the luxuriously large feel of the corner bath while fitting into a similar-shaped space to a normal straight bath. Their big advantage is that they offer more legroom than "triangular" corner baths, so they're a good choice for taller bathers.
So how do you decide what's right for you? Measure, measure, measure! Work out how much wall space you have available for your bath, and remember to allow space around the bath and other fittings. Be realistic about the size of bath your room can accomodate: it's better to get something slightly smaller and have it look great. That way, you can be sure of a beautiful bath which will give you years of enjoyment.
Cleaning and caring for your whirlpool bath
Is your bath really clean? How about the pipework? Whirlpool pumps and damp, humid pipes are a natural haven for bacteria, dirt and grime. Bath deposits such as soap, shampoo and hair can build up within the pipework and are all ready to return the next time you use the bath. Follow our top tips to keep your whirlpool bath clean and fresh.
Stick with low-foam bubble baths for use in your whirlpool bath. Traditional bubble baths combined with a whirlpool can create more bubbles than you bargained for!
After each use, clean off any residue in the bath with hot, soapy water and dry with a soft cloth. Jets should be cleaned with a cotton bud or small washing up brush to remove any grime around them. Especially in hard water areas, regular cleaning is essential to prevent the build-up of ugly limescale deposits.
Once every 6 weeks or so, clean the jet system out fully using Whirlpool Bath Cleaner:
- Fill the bath and run with cold water, with the air control off
- Run for 10 minutes; ensure the room is well-ventilated
- Empty the bath and refill and then rinse
This should stop any build-up of bacteria within the jet system and keep your bath and pipework fresh. Don't use ordinary household cleaners or detergents, as these can harm your system as well as your skin.
Never use abrasive cleaners on acrylic baths or on chrome or gold-plated bath fittings: you'll spoil the beautiful finish. Bleach can also damage the surface of baths, so always choose cleaners that are specially formulated for use on acrylic baths. Or for a truly budget solution, make your own from a mixture of half vinegar, half warm water: this is great for removing mild rust and hard water stains.
The real key to maintaining a beautiful fresh whirlpool bath is regular care and prompt cleaning. Don't let dirt, grime or limescale build up, and you'll have a luxurious bath to sink into for many years to come.

Do you dream in colour?
Take the ultimate in relaxation to a whole new level... Imagine sliding into a soothing whirlpool bath, bathed not only in the warm water, but in calming purple light. Or the refreshing zing of a spa bath with lemon-fresh bubbles and yellow light to help you rise and shine each morning.
Many cultures believe in the power of colour to affect our mood. We use it almost without thinking: bedrooms painted in softer, darker colours to help relaxation; fast food restaurants in bright primary reds and yellows to make us eat up quickly; offices and company websites alike in business-like blues and greys. But did you know the ancient Egyptians built solariums with coloured glass to bathe the occupant in coloured light? Medieval doctors believed wearing the right colours could help cure diseases, and Ayurvedic practitioners prescribe colour therapy today. Whatever the medical reality, colours can have a powerful effect on our mood and help us to stimulate the senses or calm our thoughts.
Now you can bring luxurious chromotherapy to your own bathroom. Just dim your lights, maybe light a few candles and treat yourself to some, or all of the following:
Red - warm and primal, the colour of passion
Orange - the colour of the rising sun, the perfect wake up call
Yellow - the colour of the risen sun, the perfect energiser
Green - rediscover your connection to nature and the harmony in your universe
Blue - the colour of the infinite sky, dare to dream your dreams
Indigo - relaxing and soothing, the perfect colour for the end of a long week
Violet - the colour of mystery and your subconscious: reconnect with your inner self.
Our gorgeous chromotherapy light can be set to the colour of your choice, or left to gently cycle through the whole rainbow, bathing you in beautifully soft coloured light. They can be fitted to any bath before it leaves our showroom, or supplied separately to fit to your existing bath.
Don't just dream in colour: now you can bathe in it too.
